Minutes of Board of Directors Meeting -- March 25, 2009
A regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the San Diego County Bicycle
Coalition (SDCBC) was called to order at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, March 25, 2009,
at the principal office of SDCBC in Downtown San Diego by Chair Brian Parent,
pursuant to a notice [1] E-mailed to all directors.
The following persons attended the meeting. Those marked with an
asterisk (*) arrived after the call to order.

Behrendt claimed to also represent the Sierra Club Bicycle Section.

Printed copies of the minutes of the previous meeting [2] were passed
out at the meeting. The reading was waived and the minutes were approved by
voice vote.
The Treasurer's report for January [3], which had previously been
E-mailed to all directors, was accepted and submitted for audit by voice vote.
A brief oral membership report was presented by the Executive Director
in the absence of the Membership Chair.
The Executive Director and several directors reported on the National
Bicycle Summit in Washington, D.C., with particular attention paid to the
policy of prohibiting mountain bikes in National Wilderness areas.
The Executive Director reported on the problems experienced by San Diego
Cyclo-Vets with Fiesta Island permits. By voice vote, the Board decided
to support San Diego Cyclo-Vets in this matter and to send representatives to
the Mission Bay Park Committee meetings.
Robert Leone suggested a Web site disclaimer regarding Critical Mass
rides. Jim Baross suggested doing what the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition
does. Action on this matter was informally postponed to the next meeting.
The Board discussed the possibility of changing the length and starting
time of regular Board meetings. By voice vote, the Board decided to retain
the 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM time, with the possibility of extending the meeting to
9:00 PM.
The Executive Director announced that the Education Program
Coordinator hiring committee had recommended hiring Orville Fitz-Henley, and
the Board approved the action by voice vote.
The Executive Director distributed printed copies of an Executive Director
Report [4] and explained items in it, especially the $10,000 grant for a BFC
(Bicycle Friendly Community) program.
Jim Baross announced the Earth Fair and the Velodrome Spring Swap
Meet, both in Balboa Park on April 19, and noted that volunteers would be
needed to staff the SDCBC bicycle parking corrals at the Earth Fair.
The Newsletter Editor then announced the following articles and other
matters:
- The Lake Hodges Bridge is delayed.
- An article on Pedal to the Park.
- The deadline for material for the next issue is March 30.
- Newsletter assembly on Wednesday, April 8 at 6:30 PM [at Standley
Recreation Center].
- A call for volunteers for the SDCBC pit stops on Bike to Work Day.
- Bike to School Days and other bicycle related items in a school
newspaper.
- The Western Salt Bike Path will open on April 18, probably at 11:00
AM, with ceremonies at the north end of Thirteenth St. in Imperial
Beach.
- A front-page story about the $10,000 grant described in the
Executive Director report.

- An article about the new Education Program Coordinator.
- An article about San Diego River Days and possibly an
SDCBC-sponsored event.
- An article about Velo Cult events.
- A call for volunteers at the SDCBC bicycle parking corrals at the
Earth Fair in Balboa Park.
- Something about the Race Across America June 17-20.
- A call for a volunteer to store the bicycle racks.
- An article about the National Bicycle Summit.
- An education and safety article about road rage.
- The new logo will appear atop the front page.

The Board heard the following Club reports:
- The Wheelmen have returned from an outing in the Las Vegas red rock area.
- The Sierra club is planning an event in Warner Springs.
- The North County Cycle Club has two cross-country riders starting April 4,
others will ride with them for part of the first day, and Lou Medina has been
elected club president.
- Major Taylor will ride from Lake Henshaw to Palomar Observatory on Sunday.
- San Diego Bicycle Club club night was on Monday night. The club is
preparing for the Barrio Logan race on Saturday May 2, 2009.
- The Cyclo-Vets will hold their omnium on April 3-5, with Fiesta Island
time trials on April 3 and a road race at the Golden Acorn Casino on April 4.
- The Tri Club will race on Fiesta Island.
- The Tandem Club board is resigning.
- The Knickerbikers will join the Sierra Club in Warner Springs on May 1-3,
will do mountain biking at Big Bear May 23-25, a Grand Illinois tour June
14-20 and an Alaska tour June 26 to July 17.
- The Ride Across California will finish the second week in April with a
ride partly on Old Highway 395 from San Pasqual to Carlsbad.
- Announcements were made of the LCI seminar in Sacramento three weeks ago
and the June Bicycle Education Conference in San Jose.
The meeting was adjourned by general consent at 8:33 PM.
