We offer many classes to help bicyclists improve their comfort and safety on the road. All classes are taught by League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructors.
The League produced a video summarizing the content of their approved BikeEd program for the US Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This video, titled NHTSA Bicycle Safety Tips For Adults, can be viewed on You Tube here.
Ride and Learn | Road I | Road II | Bike for Life Seminar | Other Options
Once a month we offer a fun ride in a scenic part of San Diego County. Part learning experience, part coffee jaunt, these rides welcome all riders, but are geared for beginners. If you would like an introduction to road riding, riding in a group, or just a nice morning out with some fun bicyclists, this is a ride for you. The rides are typically 8-10 miles, flat, and we do it at a pace that encourages talking and interaction (somewhere around 8-12 mph average, depending on the group). We talk a lot, stop a lot, and usually eat or at least bring doughnuts, while getting information about riding in various situations. No registration required – just show up and ride! Road I is a nine-hour course that provides the basics for safe and enjoyable bicycle riding. More ‘driving school for bikes’ than fitness coaching, the class is half in the classroom, half on the bike, and covers questions such as:
- The Bicycle how it works, adjustments, selection, tire repair
- Bicycle Handling scanning, signaling, emergency maneuvers, shifting
- Riding in Traffic principles of traffic law, rights and responsibilities of bicyclists and motorists, dealing with road situations and hazards
- Ride Enjoyment and Etiquette clothing, nutrition, bike path riding, group riding
Follow the "photos" link on the left to see the "graduation picture" after a recent Road I class.
To cover all the material, this class is usually
taught in three hour sections over three consecutive weekends.
Riding is a part of all three sessions, so students are expected
to bring a bicycle and helmet to each class. Students range from
beginners to more advanced riders – the only requirement is
that students be able to balance, pedal, and steer a bike. Registration
required (click
here to download registration form) . Please fill in the
form on-line and submit by email as provided for on the form, then
print the form, sign it, and mail it in to complete the registration
process. We must have your signature on the waiver portion of the
form before the class begins (sorry, our lawyers made us say that).
If your mail client software allows for generation of a "Digital
Signature", that is an acceptable substitute and there is no requirement
for the hand written signature or a hard copy of the form.

A continuation of Road I, Road II provides more information about bicycle maintenance and practice of more difficult traffic situations. Road I touches on how brakes and gears work on the bike, and Road II advances those concepts for more elaborate adjustment and maintenance of those bike systems. Where Road I exposes students to roadway riding on residential streets, collector streets and minor arterials, Road II takes students through more challenging situations such as freeway interchanges and hillier terrain. Completion of Road I and registration are required for participation in Road II. (click

Contact the Coalition at execdir@sdcbc.org for more information or to schedule a seminar for your company or group.
The Coalition provides group instruction in flexible formats for different audiences such as children, bike clubs, special events, and others. Examples of special classes the Coalition has provided include Kids I and Kids II classes, A ‘Road Warrior’ type class, guided rides for bike clubs, and company lunchtime on-bike instruction. If you have a special event or group and are interested in a type of class listed here (or you have an idea for a class not listed!) please contact the Coalition at execdir@sdcbc.org to discuss potential options.
